Biography

Imagine a girl sitting in a box car, feet dangling out the door, she is strumming a guitar singing her heart out.  Karla Adolphe is known as a powerful and dynamic singer, who brings award-winning songwriting and her enigmatic personality to every performance. She is generous with her audiences; pouring her heart and soul into every song and creating special moments of communion.

Over the past six years, Karla Adolphe has created a diverse career for herself touring North America in a 40ft RV performing in Jacob and Lily, The Emporiums or as a solo artist. Karla is currently writing songs for an album devoted to the subject of grief, expect this album in 2012.

Jacob and Lily’s debut cd The Cathedral was nominated for 2007 Canadian Folk Music Best New/Emerging Artist, and receives consistent national/regional airplay on the CBC. Jacob and Lily were also featured on CBC Radio 2’s Next! program which aired taped performances of Canada’s top 50 up and coming acts. Look for a new album from Jacob and Lily in 2012.

In 2011 Karla paired up with acclaimed artist/producer Aaron Strumpel and created The Emporiums, their first album The Singing Well is a warm and textured project most noted for gorgeous harmonies, weathered voices and incredible songwriting.

Karla is also the featured artist on Chair and Microphone Vol 3, a live solo gospel project recorded with Worship Circle Records in Colorado, USA. The project highlights Karla’s personal songwriting and intimate, melancholic performances. In September 2011 the song You Are Mine was licensed to the television show Hart of Dixie in the pilot episode.

Karla is also featured on Worship Circle’s Fourth Circle – an energetic collaborative album recorded live with 6 other artists. Both Worship Circle albums have received critical acclaim, and have sold copies all around the world.

Karla has enjoyed playing over 500 shows in the past six years, both as a solo artist and with Jacob and Lily, and now with The Emporiums. Some highlights include: The Winnipeg Folk Festival, Blue Skies Festival, Trout Forest Music Festival, BarrieFolk, and an official showcase at the 2007 NXNE festival, featured artist at Ken Whiteley’s Gospel Hour, and the Orillia Folk Society.

Karla has also enjoyed sharing the stage with: Patty Loveless, The Dan Tyminski Band, Chris Knight, Solas, The Fugitives, C.R. Avery, Ray Bonneville, The Good Lovelies, Little Miss Higgins, Chic Gamine, Rose Cousins, Elliot Brood, Alana Levendoski, The Arrogant Worms, Craig Cardiff, Twilight Hotel, and Cara Luft.

Karla was selected as one of 5 Co-Winners at the 2008 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, and performed live on NPR/internationally broadcast Mountain Stage radio/television show. Over the past three years Karla has had multiple recordings included on compilations such as the Record of the Week Club, Manitoba Music, Bridge Songs and Manitoba Roots.

Karla is currenlty shepherding a creative community through www.therustycaravan.com; an online creative networking initiative. The Rusty Caravan will house all of Karla’s creative adventures, link artists from across North America, and feature insightful blogs, and pre-releases of new material.
